Eyelash Growth Serums Are Selling Out Across London And They May Be Behind the Spike in Blepharitis Cases Specialists Are Seeing

ENGRNEWSWIREBy ENGRNEWSWIREJuly 1, 2026Updated:July 9, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

Eyelash growth serums have become one of the fastest-growing categories in the UK beauty market. Several contain active ingredients based on prostaglandin analogues, the same class of compound used in prescription glaucoma drops, known for the side effect of promoting eyelash growth. The consumer versions are sold at lower concentrations, but they are not inert, and the evidence that they can disrupt the delicate ecology of the eyelid margin is growing.

Oculoplastic and corneal specialists in London have reported a noticeable increase in patients presenting with lid inflammation, meibomian gland disruption, and symptoms that look very much like blepharitis often, upon taking a history, in patients who have recently started using a lash growth product. Finding a real cure for blepharitis in London increasingly involves first identifying what is driving it.

What Blepharitis Actually Is

Blepharitis is a condition involving chronic inflammation of the eyelid margins. It comes in two main forms: anterior blepharitis, which affects the base of the eyelashes and is often associated with bacterial colonisation or a skin condition called seborrhoeic dermatitis; and posterior blepharitis, which involves dysfunction of the meibomian glands the small oil-producing glands along the inner lid margin that secrete the lipid layer of the tear film.

In practice, many patients have a combination of both. Symptoms include redness, crusting, itching, and a persistent gritty or burning sensation in the eyes. It is not dangerous to vision in mild cases, but it is chronic, recurrent, and genuinely miserable to live with if poorly managed. A proper cure for blepharitis in London requires an assessment that identifies the specific type and underlying drivers.

The Prostaglandin Connection

Prostaglandin-analogue compounds used in ophthalmic medications bimatoprost being the best known are associated with a range of periorbital side effects including periorbital fat atrophy, deepening of the upper lid sulcus, and changes to meibomian gland structure. Consumer lash serums use compounds from the same chemical family, sometimes under different names, and the concentrations, while lower, are applied directly along the lash line precisely where the meibomian gland openings sit.

Repeated application of these compounds near the lid margin is now understood to potentially contribute to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), which is the most common underlying cause of evaporative dry eye and posterior blepharitis. The irony is that many patients use these products in pursuit of beauty, unaware that they may be contributing to a condition that makes their eyes look and feel worse.

Why Blepharitis Is Often Undertreated

Part of the problem with blepharitis is that patients tend to manage it with whatever they find in a pharmacy lid wipes, warm compresses, occasional antibiotic drops without ever addressing the root cause. For anterior blepharitis, these approaches can provide temporary relief. For posterior blepharitis involving meibomian gland dysfunction, they are often insufficient.

The most effective cure for blepharitis in London, when MGD is the underlying driver, typically involves a combination of in-clinic treatments. Thermal pulsation therapy (such as LipiFlow) applies controlled heat and pressure directly to the meibomian glands, clearing impacted secretions and improving gland function. Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, originally developed in dermatology, has strong clinical evidence for reducing the inflammatory markers associated with both MGD and rosacea-related blepharitis.

The Assessment Process

A proper assessment for blepharitis in a London specialist clinic goes beyond looking at the lid margins with a slit lamp. It includes meibography imaging of the meibomian glands to assess structural integrity and identify gland dropout as well as tear film analysis and, where relevant, microbiological assessment for bacterial and Demodex mite colonisation.

Demodex blepharitis caused by microscopic mites that live in the follicles of the eyelashes is increasingly recognised as a significant and underdiagnosed driver of lid inflammation. It does not respond to standard antibiotic treatments and requires specific management with tea tree oil-based lid hygiene or, more recently, FDA-approved lotilaner ointment. A clinic with full diagnostic capability, such as those operating under the Optimal Vision name, can distinguish between these different forms when standard treatment has failed.

What to Do If You Suspect a Connection

If you have been using a lash growth serum and have developed any of the symptoms described above lid redness, increased eye discomfort, watery or gritty eyes, morning crusting it is reasonable to stop the product and observe whether symptoms improve. But if symptoms are established, simply stopping the serum is unlikely to resolve the inflammation without targeted treatment.

The cure for blepharitis in London that provides lasting relief is almost always a structured clinical treatment plan, not a product swap.

Final Thoughts

The pursuit of longer, fuller lashes is not going away. But there are safer ways to achieve the look without potentially compromising the health of the lid margin. If you are already managing blepharitis and have been struggling to find lasting relief, a full assessment that takes your complete product history into account may be the missing piece. The cure for blepharitis in London that works is the one matched to the actual cause and finding that cause requires proper clinical investigation.
